Site on hold for a week

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

I will be unavailable for about a week, so don’t expect any posts during that time.

See you in October!

un-Bento #32 - Omelette du fromage (a quote from The Tick)

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Sorry about the long title.

Today I used up the last of my Egg Beaters at work (cheddar and chive flavor) to make about a 3 egg omelette (took about 2 minutes in the microwave in 30 second intervals with stirring in between) in a bowl. Then put a slice of cheese on top of half, cut down the middle and separate the egg from the bowl with a fork. I dipped it in my leftover McDonald’s salsa and it was quite good!

un-Bento #31 - Revisiting my younger days

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

With all the peanut allergies around these days, I feel this old favourite lunch of mine has been kicked out of schools. I find this a shame since my friends and I all enjoyed it growing up.

I’m talking about the good old PBJ - peanut butter and jam sandwhich. Add a glass of cold milk and you have a fairly healthy, and tastey lunch!

If only I could find a peanut butter substitute, that tasted similar and was at least as healthy…

un-Bento #30 - Cleaning out the cupboard

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Lunch today is not pretty or glamorous. But it is fairly healthy, and uses up canned food which is this week’s goal.

A cup of white rice mixed with peas and corn, topped with beef vegetable soup. When served I will be adding some soya sauce and possible a spot of garlic chilli hot sauce.

You don’t want to know last nights ecclectic snacking that helped use things up.

un-Bento #29 - Cool weather lunch

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I’m cleaning out the canned goods at home so this week may find some strange lunches.

Today isn’t bento - its homemade chilli. Anyone can make it, and its fairly cheap to do.

Throw a can of diced tomatoes, beans (pinto or romano are best), mushrooms, browned onions, and spaghetti sauce into a slow cooker. You can add meat if you like as well. Let it cook away for a few hours, stirring to keep it from sticking to the bottom. When its done you have a great base for other dishes, or a feel good meal for winter months.

Bento #28 - Not eggsactly what I had in mind

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Today was something a little different. Chow mein and chicken rice in an omelette with cherry tomatoes on the side, and hoisin sauce to taste. Very good!

Bento #27 - Porkies III: Return of Bun Bun

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Can you tell I’m having fun with titles this week? :-D

Today I decided to have all the BBQ pork and bok choy which was hard to squeeze into the container! For my starch I’m having steamed buns with chicken and veggies in hot sauce.

I’ll try to get a picture cause its been so long with text only here. I need to get a Bento camera station set up to ensure photos before the yummy food is eaten! So check back later today, and I’ll try to have a pic for you.

– Well here it is later, and I’m about to eat this tastey looking lunch. Here is the pic I promised, even though its bad quality.

Note I added 2 animal picks - bunny and dog. I got them for my daughter, but she’s not quite old enough yet. Dog-bun, meet Bun-bun!

Bento #26 - Porkies II

As promised - more leftovers!

Today was rushed so its just leftover BBQ pork chow mein, ramen noodles, and a banana. I threw a strawberry sauce container in for color only.

Tune in for tomorrow’s exciting sequel!

Welcome back to school folks!

Just a little note from the site admin to say welcome back to school!

Since the idea behind bento is school box lunches, this seems like a valid thing to acknowledge.

Bento #25 - Porkies

Monday, September 8th, 2008

This week I will have a BBQ pork theme. On the weekend I got lots of take out on that theme and so far its all really tasety.

Today’s lunch is BBQ pork foo young with chicken fried rice. I love that Foo Young is really just throwing things into a pan and adding an egg to hold it all together - meat, snow peas, bok choy, sprouts, etc. I added a couple cherry tomatoes on top for color, and a fruit cup for dessert with a little fish bottle of grenadine to mix it up a bit!
