Another un-bento?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I need to find a good name for when I make lunch, but have no pictures.

Today it was leftovers from last night - slivered ham, with green and yellow beans in a creamy mustard sauce. Then add some mashed squash on the side, and some white rice with sprinkles to finish it off.

I wasn’t brave enough to use my cod roe sprinkles from Japan yet, so I just used ground nori, salt, and sesame seeds. It wasn’t bad!

Sorry about no pic.. :-(

Magic expanding tasty soup

Monday, May 26th, 2008

You know the soup you get when you go to a Japanese restaurant? Miso soup! There are a few variations on it with the main two being pure seaweed (no tofu) and tofu with seaweed.

Kikkoman has instant soup packets that taste really good! I’m having one of those for lunch today - the one with tofu.

Yum!

Where oh where did the leafy greens go?

I’ve been going over lots of ideas for fun lunches lately - I’ve been inspired by all this new gear I got!

But I never seem to have the veggies and stuff I want at home when I want it. I’m considering getting a veggie delivery service. There are some local farms that will drop off a basket of veggies weekly to your house! The veggies will be seasonal but include greens and onions and staples as well.

I’d still have to go shopping for specialty stuff, but this would make sure I have the basics at home to make something. Plus with my wife on mat leave, there’d be someone home to put them away on delivery.

I think I’ll check them out this weekend at the farmer’s market and see what their prices are like. It will sure beat (beet?) weeding the garden all summer, even if it means more grass to cut!

Bento #16 - Papa has a sweet tooth tonight!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Straight to business.

Sliced onions browning in pan. Cheap ham, slivered. Cucumber slivered. Shredded carrot. A couple spoons of thick terriyaki. Cook on low until sauce cooks into everything.

Serve with baby bok choy, and noodles.

Baby Bok Choy <-- baby bok choy - yum, chunky style! ;)

Bento #15 - Now thats more like it!

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I have been sort of side stepping the whole reason I started this blog lately - to post my neat lunches.

Well, here is my first bento lunch in a while, and it comes in the new large 1 tier bento box (that even has a thermal bag with ice packs to keep it cool!)

Bento # 15

There is cucumber rolls to the right with ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce in a little fish container (isn’t it cute!?). Moving left we have some fragrant Indian rice - basmati rice with lots of great spices and nuts and things. Then baby carrots and cucumber slices surround a simple sliced omelette - eggs, and onion soup mix with some terryaki sauce on top for a little sweetness.

Fun seafood for kids!

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Are you having problems getting your kids to eat seafood?

Do you tell them its good for them, only to get the plate shoved away?

Well, worry no more! Here is a new way to get them to eat.. octopus! Yes that once icky food now is cute and fun!

You can get a little tool that cuts the hotdog into a 6-armed octopus. Then you cut small pieces of nori (seaweed wrap used on sushi), wet the hotdog surface, and place the eyes/nose/moth/etc. on to stick in place! Kids will love it!

The thing on top of the one head was supposed to be a baseball cap. Oh well first try. :)

My ship(ment) has come in!

Yes, at last I have the order of bento bits from Japan.

This includes a couple new bento boxes, sauce containers, some animal shaped picks, hotdog shapers, and some cod roe flakes.

Hmm.. what should I make for tomorrows lunch…

Well, this afternoon’s work is shot now - I can’t concentrate. :-)

No bento, but I got a neat little package

Yup, today I’m a new Dad. I was already a dad, but its exciting the 2nd time around too.

So you won’t see many more posts from me for a while. However, that order from Japan should be back on its way in a couple weeks. That will spur me on I’m sure.

Until then!
